Abstract
This paper investigates various types of discrepancies between form and meaning in Korean, especially those between grammatical elements and their meanings/functions. The grammatical elements examined here include the morphological causative affix, the hortative affix, pronouns and the past tense form of verb. Each of these grammatical elements exhibits various meanings/functions which are different from its “conventional” meaning/function. By showing that for some of the grammatical elements discussed in this paper similar discrepancies between form and meaning occur in other languages, it is suggested that they be cases of grammatical polysemy.
