본 연구는 카프카의 「학술원에 보내는 보고서」를 일차적으로 동물 이야기로 읽어 보려는 시도이다. 로트페터의 이야기를 흔히 읽듯 소수자의 이야기로 해석하는 경우 주인공이 동물이라는 점은 다른 내용을 전달하기 위한 비유나 상징이 됨으로써 사실상 무엇인가로 치환되고 결국은 소거되어 “부재하는 지시대상”이 되어 버리는 경향이 있다. 본 논문에서는 이 작품에 나타난 동물에 대한 폭력에 초점을 맞추며, 그것이 동물의 관점에서 어떻게 그려지는가를 분석한다. 그리고 나서 이 이야기가 어떻게 동시에 소수자에 대한 폭력의 이야기로 다양하게 읽힐 수 있는지, 그 근거와 구체적인 연결고리를 찾는다. 그것은 한편으로는 비서구인과 동물이 갖는, 후마니타스의 타자라는 공통점이며, 다른 한편으로는 인간의 동물화와 동물의 인간화라는 서로 연결되어 있는 폭력이다. 이를 통해 로트페터의 글쓰기는 동물 및 다른 소수자들이라는 타자들이 서벌턴, 유목적 주체, 포스트휴먼적 주체로서 동시에 혹은 중층적으로 되받아 쓰는 이야기가 된다.
Abstract
This paper is a new attempt to read Franz Kafka's A Report to an Academy primarily as a story of animals. Rotpeter’s story tends to become a metaphor or a symbol conveying another meaning and consequently to function as an “absent referent” when one tries to interpret the story as that of the minorities, which was a more common interpretation so far. This paper analyzes the perceptions and descriptions of animals on the violence against themselves from their point of view. Next, this study shows the logic how this story can be read as that of violence against various minorities as well as that of violence against animals and how both are connected. The first connection is the fact that the animals are the others of humanitas, which is a commonality they share with non-Europeans; the second connection consists of the closely interconnected forms of violence that are the animalization of humans and the humanization of animals. As a result, Rotpeter’s writing becomes a “writing-back” story that the others such as animals and other minorities compose simultaneously or in multiple layers as subaltern, nomadic and posthuman subjects.
