초록
In this study, I want to read Linda Hogan's Mean Spirit as a polyphonic novel to find out others' voices. Mikhail Bakhtin says that in a polyphonic novel, an ideology is based on a language and many characters are ideologically independent from the narrator of other characters; languages are logically connected with a view of the world. Bakhtin's theory is pertinent to Linda Hogan's view of a language. As an indian woman of mixed-blood and an ecological writer, Hogan continually tries to represent others' languages. She attempts to present the various forms of their languages as well as human's utterances, and their languages tend to free from the limits that the language of whites has. In this novel, I especially focus on finding out others' voices hidden in the sub-plots. I think that their voices are those of victims. If we notice them, we can dream of the more ecological world. As we more carefully listen to others' languages and accept them, the present destructive view of the world will be more able to change into the view of making the earth community harmonious. This possibility of the change is seen as Linda Hogan's purpose of writing.
