Abstract

This study examines the methods for the activation of the management of Lee Yuksa Literary House in Andong, Kyungbuk. This study is divided into two parts: an overview to the background behind the establishment of the Lee Yuksa Literary House; and, possible models of management. In Korea, as in France, literary houses provide literary programs that satisfy public tastes primarily because they function as spaces for the enjoyment of literature. Though Lee Yuksa Literary House has many advantages as a literary house, it will nevertheless still need to develop effective management programs and to realize itself as a place for a new type of cultural activities. Different from many other literary houses in Korea, Lee Yuksa Literary House is currently managed by a private non-profit institution with financial support from the local government. This study argues that Lee Yuksa Literary House should take part in the activities of the Korean Literature House Association, specifically those that are designed to realize benchmarking against the management models of other literary houses. This study proposes several programs to activate the management of the Lee Yuksa Literary House. Firstly, in regards to literary activity, Lee Yuksa Literary House could organize a ‘Lee Yuksa Literary Festival’ with composition contests, literary discussions, and authors giving talks as well. Secondly, it must enlarge its field of operations, one of the ways of doing so is to form a Lee Yuksa Cultural Festival, which can enable it to move towards the formation of a lasting cultural complex. Lastly, it can organize a Lee Yuksa Literary Circuit by connecting various places concerning the traces of the author's life with other cultural assets in the region.
