초록

Inaugurated in 2001, Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE) has reached its 10th anniversary this year. Compared to the year of its establishment, the society has shown a rapid growth in its membership and diversification of thesis. The research works held has not only been comprehensive but also concrete. Considering that today's ecological crisis coincides with the reproductive crisis of the ecology that stems from the social activities of human beings and the current trend that reflects the feasibility of extinction of all living organisms including human beings, the role of ASLE proves to be indispensable. This crisis goes beyond a mere crisis, demanding a big change of the contemporary society. It also calls for a rational countermeasure, far beyond a mere consciousness of the ecological crisis. Hence a critical understanding of both the exposed and unexposed achievements of ASLE is required. Indeed, the root of contemporary ecological crisis that we encounter today does not exist somewhere distant, but leads to a repetition of vicious cycle to our daily lives. This thesis has organised ten-year literary achievements issued in "Literature and Environment." which deals with the academic researches on Korean novels. By analyzing the different approaches and contents that the novels entail, it examines the ways in which the future researches could be more productive. Although there has been only 18 academic magazines published so far, not only does it cover studies about poetries, novels and the criticisms of Korean Literature, but also discusses the trend, brief reviews and even conversations of foreign literature. Among the studies, there are 18 volumes of Korean literary work and 15 authors have been discussed. Currently, 10 writers have passed away and five of them are alive. The former includes Dongin Kim, Dongli Kim, Hyoseok Lee,Youngsoo Oh, Sunwon Hwang, Munkoo Lee, Sungwon Hong, Chungjun Lee, Younghan Park, and Yoonki Lee and the latter contains Sehee Cho,Seungwon Han, Youngeun Seo, Youngrae Kim, and Kang Han. Mostly, there were mainly researches on literacy works, and there are cases in which works by the same author have been reserached on; however, the studied works, although there have been multiple studies on them, were not in the same extent. The point of view and the method of observation were different. Comprehensively, studies on Korean literature expressed in "Literature and Environment." investigated the world reproduced in literature such as nature and ecology, with the point of view in relational understanding. There are more invisible portions of the environment and ecological secret that surrounds us, than the visible ones. Ecological novels visualize the veiled world, and must focus on healing the unseen ecology to a healthy state. It is, however, difficult to provide one clear answer for the solution. The future studies of Korean ecological literature needs to be conscious of searching and solving these issues.
