Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how Seo Jeong-ju's various thought systems about reincarnation appear in the whole range of his literature. I believe that we are able to reconsider the value of his prose in the study of Seo Jeong-ju especially by intensively shedding light on the buried one in the paper. It is noteworthy to find the data that shows Seo has an extraordinary intuition and insight into the issue of reincarnation from the teenage wanderer. In particular, it is important that Shakespeare's play 'Hamlet’ is revealed as a work that gives inspiration to Seo Jeong-ju's intuition and insight into reincarnation. I can see his attitude of thinking creatively about reincarnation in that he did not acquire reincarnation by solely relying on Buddhist grammar. Regardless of Hamlet's context, Seo was able to find an analogy between the extinction of human life and the circulation of natural energy. The main poetic objet based on the concept of reincarnation is blood and water, which represent well the separation and combination of patterns of matter. Blood, the symbol of life, is a combination of light and water. When one life ends, light and water separate. The red pigment of the blood travels through the entire solar system after moving into the world of light, and then finally returns to the camellia, cockscomb, or jujube, and the water goes to the clouds of the earth's atmosphere and is incorporated into the water circulation system of the earth's ecosystem, which reflects Seo Jung-ju’s unique reasons that no energy can escape from this closed system. Such reasons are not dependent on Buddhist grammar, such as Sam-saeng(past, present, and future lives) and Samgye(the triple realm), but are unique cases where real-life experiences, scientific knowledge, and poetic imagination are combined. Samgye and Yukdo(six states of karmic existence) is the concept of dividing space, and Sip-i Yeon-gi(the twelve Nidanas: the twelve-linked chain of dependent origination) is time. Seo Jeong-ju deduces this space in and out of the solar system and recognizes time through the aspects of past, present, and future life. Seo applies the cycle of material energy to this process, which results in a way of finding the attitude of life in closed systems through the imagination of 'water that makes rocks cry'. The reincarnation of Seo Jeong-ju is the process of energy exchange in the solar system, where water and light meet and break apart, rather than a painful process of endless circling of Samgye where the physical category is unidentified, and the laws that are common to all living organisms in the global ecosystem; the law can be proved by discovering the encounter and break-up of pigments and water in individual objects. The essence of life is eternal life, and the life in this closed system is, therefore, the best choice to give affection to one's neighbors, not himself. Key word: reincarnation, the circulation of natural energy, Samgye and Yukdo(six states of karmic existence), Sip-i Yeon-gi(the twelve Nidanas)
