Abstract

This paper analyzes Ian McEwan’s Solar in light of the novel’s protagonist Michael Beard, who experiences a personal dystopia due to anthropocentric thinking and greed in the face of anthropogenic climate change. As the general public has become more and more interested in the urgency of the climate crisis in recent years, more contemporary writers are writing about climate change in climate change novels through various themes and plots. Solar differentiates itself from other traditional dystopian climate change novels, which generally deal with apocalyptic catastrophes, by being a climate change novel of literary realism, employing satires and allegories. In relation to climate change, this paper first examines the symbolic importance of the temporal and spatial backgrounds appearing in the novel. Then the paper discusses the importance of sustainable renewable energy that could help the transition from fossil fuels that threaten the survival and prosperity of humans and non-human animals and the consideration of the danger of self-destructive climate crisis caused by continuous human over-consumption. Finally, this paper examines how the interdisciplinary convergence of the sciences and humanities is reproduced within the novel. This paper intends to explore the problems with human nature in response to climate change caused by anthropogenic global warming that McEwan attempts to show in the novel and the solution to the climate change crisis or the message to the readers that the author presents.
