Abstract

This study explores how poetry cultivates the poetic sensing of climate’s agency and its ecological-ethical implications. Moving beyond nature as background or symbol, it conceptualizes climate as an active agent that intervenes in human perception and social structures, and examines the role of poetry in mediating this recognition. The theoretical framework is drawn from Jane Bennett’s vibrant materialism with a focus on the concepts of thing-power and assemblage. Within this framework, Gi Hyeong-do’s “Fog” is analyzed as depicting fog as a tangible presence that shapes perception, fosters habits, and generates events. Fog emerges as an agent shaping human interiority and social order, thereby reconfiguring the subject–environment boundary. It functions not merely as a critical symbol of social systems but as a force reorganizing life at affective and perceptual levels. Poetry makes such imperceptible forces perceptible, positioning climate as a coexistent agent and cultivating the affective ground for ecological ethics. This study underscores poetry’s role in cultivating ecological ethics and offering ontological insights in the era of climate crisis.
