문화예술 활동이 청소년 정서에 미치는 영향- 생태학적 관점에서의 실증연구-

이 연구는 2011년 중학교 2학년을 대상으로 한국청소년정책연구원이 실시한 「한국 아동청소년 패널조사 2011」의 원시 자료를 활용하여(n=2270명), 생태학적 관점에서 문화예술 활동이 청소년 정서에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석한 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 부정적 정서와 이에 영향을 미치는 환경변수(부모·교사·교우 관계, 학교 생활)로 경로 모형을 설정했다. 다음으로 문화예술 활동이 부정적 정서에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위해, 문화예술 활동 경험집단과 무경험집단 사이에 연구모델의 경로의 차이가 있는지를 구조방정식모형(SEM, Structural Equation Modeling)을 통해 분석했다. 청소년의 정서적 문제는 공격성, 우울, 사회적 위축 등 행동 증세로 표출되는 것이 일반적인데, 문화예술 활동은 이러한 부정적 정서를 여러 경로를 통해 완화시키는 조절 효과가 있었다. 문화예술 활동 경험집단(n=1,798)은 무경험집단(n=472)에 비해, 부모 학대가 부정적 정서를 증가시키는 양(+)의 효과가 약화되었다. 반면 교사친밀도, 교우친밀도, 학교적응도가 부정적 정서를 약화시키는 음(-)의 효과는 강화되었다. 부모애정도가 부정적 정서를 감소시키는 음(-)의 효과는 무경험집단에서 더 높게 나타났는데, 이는 문화예술 활동 무경험집단이 부모 애정에 더 민감하다는 것을 의미한다. 이러한 결과는 문화예술 활동을 경험한 학생들은 그렇지 않은 학생들에 비해 생태학적 관점에서 다양한 경로를 통해 부정적 정서형성을 완화하면서, 더욱 유기적인 개인발달과정을 경험하고 있다는 것을 제시한다. 이는 청소년 문화정책사업에 있어 청소년을 위한 장기적이고 안정적인 지원정책, 문화예술의 순기능에 입각한 공교육의 패러다임 전환과 각 부처 간 협업, 다양한 체험 활동이 가능한 지역별 문화 환경 조성의 중요성과 함께, 청소년 문화예술정책 분야의 종단연구의 필요성을 시사한다.
Abstract
This study adopts an ecological perspective to empirically navigate the issues surrounding the effects of arts and cultural activities on the emotional development of adolescents. The data is used from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2011 (KCYPS 2011), which was conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute (n=2,270). The daily activities of adolescents both influence and are influenced by the multi-layered ecology within which their lives are embedded; it is an ecology that ranges from the proximal contexts of everyday life (e.g., family, peer group, teachers) to larger settings such as schools. Based on this ecological perspective of adolescent development, a path model was constructed in which adolescents’ environmental variables (i.e., the relationship with parents, friends, and teachers; and school life) control their negative emotions such as aggressiveness, negative physical symptoms, social weakness and depression; in turn to compare two groups based on their current level of exposure to arts and cultural activities by using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results of the SEM analysis show that the engagement group (n=1,798) in arts and cultural activities seem better equipped and well-adjusted than the non-engagement group (n=472) particularly in terms of controlling their negative emotions by using various supporting channels such as parents, peer groups, and teachers. In addition, the study suggests that the former is much more developed in using their various support systems and indeed is more developed in controlling their negative emotions. The paper concludes with consideration of methodological issues and recommended directions for future research and education policy concerning engagement with arts and cultural activities and its significant role in the emotional development of adolescents.
