본 연구는 존 뮤어의 1869년 산행 일기 『나의 첫여름』(My First Summer in the Sierra)을 자연에 대한 성찰과 과학적 관찰을 중심으로 고찰한다. 1장에서는 뮤어가 방목 산행을 순례로 생각하면서 성당봉(Cathedral Peak)에 올라가 예배를 드리는 과정을 범신론적 기독교 세계관으로 논의한다. 2장은 요세미티 지형 형성에 결정적 영향을 끼친 빙하에 대한 뮤어의 자연과학적 업적을 논의한다. 본 연구는 특히 뮤어의 자연-신 사상에서 종교적 세계관과 과학적 분석이 조화롭게 공존하고 있다는 점에 주목하였다. 서양의 역사에서 종교와 과학은 대립한 적이 많았지만 뮤어의 경우는 종교적 성찰과 과학적 탐구 정신이 모두 절대자에 대한 경외심에서 진행되었기 때문에 이러한 문제가 발생하지 않았다. 그래서 뮤어가 제시한 빙하의 침식 작용은 오랜 세월 동안 서서히 지형이 형성되었다는 동일반복설(uniformitarianism)에 부합하지만 뮤어는 진화론에 찬성하지 않았다. 뮤어의 관심사는 지형이 변하는 속도가 아니라 자연물을 만들고 자연 현상을 일으키는 창조자의 힘이었다. 그리고 이 근원적인 힘을 신에게 귀속시키고 이를 과학적으로 증명하고자 하였기 때문에 뮤어의 세계관에서 영성과 이성은 충돌하지 않았다.
Abstract
John Muir (1838-1914), a Scottish-American writer and geologist, published his renowned journal My first summer in the Sierra (1911) based on his 1869 shepherding experience in the Sierra Mountains. Previous scholarship has mainly discussed the text in the environmental context, but this paper focuses more on his journey as a pilgrimage. Muir esteemed the mountain area as a holy temple and climbed Cathedral Peak (3,327m) for offering the service to God. In addition, I demonstrate Muir’s contribution to natural science, in particular, geology and geomorphology. Previously, the unique rock formation and landscape of the area were attributed to flood, volcano, and erosion, but Muir suggested the impact of glaciation in the region; his view turned out to be correct. I demonstrate that Muir’s scientific mind fundamentally came from his pious mind of God. Such a co-existence of religious pursuit and scientific exploration is understood as a combination of creeds and thoughts, such as pantheism, transcendentalism, scientific empiricism, and the theology of the Restoration Movement, founded by Alexander Campbell (1788-1866).
