초록

This paper examines Muir's and Jeffers' ecological vision, thoughts about humanity, and self-confidence. Their holistic, organic, and dynamic view of nature initiated new environmental philosophy, particularly deep ecology and their works are regarded as important basis for our contemporary environmental movement. Immersing themselves in nature which they separated from human beings, they formed this ecological consciousness. And with their experience in nature, they believed, they achieved self-transformation from ego-centric to biocentric mind. Their conviction for self-transformation granted them the firm ground for their judgement and also sovereign authority which enabled them to blame human civilization. The most serious concern of Muir and Jeffers is with the self-centeredness of human beings which places the human 'self' into the center of meaning and value. These two writers, however, scold the human self-centeredness with their conviction for their self-centeredness against their own advice. The self-centeredness of Muir and Jeffers, in fact, was hardened during their journey or stay in nature. And their works are based on this strong self-conviction. Their experience in nature led them to a suspicion of anthropocentrism. It, however, endowed them with a new figure which is heroic, prophetic, and virile. Convinced of their authority, they denounced the self-centeredness of other people. Perhaps, this paradoxical situation results from their self-centered conviction that they have a very important prophetic task.
