이 글은 영화 <웨이스트 랜드>에 나타난 쓰레기를 그레이엄 하먼의 객체의 개념으로이해하여, 쓰레기가 재활용품이 되고, 또 예술작품으로 재탄생하는 과정을 통해 쓰레기와 인간의 관계를 공생(symbiosis)의 구조에서 재사유할 수 있는 방법을 모색해보고자하였다. 서론에서는 쓰레기를 객체로 읽어내기 위해 행위자-네트워크 이론과 객체지향 존재론을 비교하면서 쓰레기의 양상을 살펴보았다. 본론에서는 인간의 삶에서 폐기물로 여겨졌던 쓰레기를 인간과 관계 맺게 하여 삶을 바꾸는 공생의 관계로 이끌어가게 하는 수사적 전략들을 두 측면에서 확인해 보았다. 첫째, 감독이 빅무니즈에게 카타도르의 청자역할을 부여하면서 그들의 삶의 이야기를 관객에게 들려주는 이유를 살펴보았다. 둘째, 빅 무니즈와 카타도르가 협업하여 조형 작업을 하는 과정에서 빅 무니즈가 이 작업을 멀리서 바라보게 하고, 또 조형 작업이 끝난 후 사진을 찍은 뒤 작품을 폐기했는지 그 이유를 알아보았다. 이를 통해 <쓰레기로 만든 작품>과 등장하는 인물들이 모두 예술작품이되어가는 과정을 추적하였다. 그래서 이 객체 간의 연결의 이루어지는 과정이 영화 <웨이스트랜드>의 서사이며, 영화 그 자체가 <쓰레기로 만든 작품>이 된다고 주장하였다. 결론적으로 이 글은 <웨이스트랜드>를 생태서사학(Econarratology)의 관점에서 돌봄의 윤리를 제시하는 영화로 보고자 한다. 관객은 영화의 서사 속에 묘사된 ‘환경’들을접하면서 실제 삶에서의 태도와 행동에도 영향을 받는다. 돌봄의 윤리적 관점은 인간이‘관계적 존재’라는 것을 이해하는 것에서부터 출발한다. 쓰레기, 카타도르, 관객들은 모두 <웨이스트랜드>의 관계에 얽혀 있다. 관객은 카타도르의 이야기를 듣고 인식하여 자신의 이야기로 재구성하면서 그들의 이야기들이 단순히 그들만의 이야기가 아니라 우리이웃의 이야기이며, 나의 이야기와 다르지 않음을 알게 된다. 카타도르뿐 아니라 우리주변의 취약한 존재들도 우리와 관계를 맺고 있다. 이를 통해 이 글은 영화 <웨이스트랜드>는 관객들에게 카타도르뿐 아니라 이웃의 삶에 관심을 기울이고 그들의 삶에 적극적으로 응답하면서 자기 삶과 마주할 것을 요구하는 영화로 읽어내고자 한다.
Abstract
This essay explores the relationship between waste and humans through the concept of Graham Harman’s object-oriented ontology, as depicted in the film Waste Land. It examines how waste transforms into recycled materials and even artworks, proposing a symbiotic understanding of the relationship between waste and humans. In the introduction, I compare actor-network theory and object-oriented ontology to uncover waste as an object. From the perspective of object- oriented ontology, both waste and humans are considered objects. The main body explores narrative strategies that transform waste, previously seen as waste in human lives, into a symbiotic relationship that changes lives. Firstly, I examine why the director assigns the role of narrators like Vik Muniz to waste pickers, sharing their stories with the audience. Secondly, I investigate why Vik Muniz collaborates with waste pickers to create sculptures, then distances himself from the work and discards it after photographing it. Through this, I trace the process where both “waste-made artwork” and the individuals involved become artworks themselves. Thus, the connections between these objects form the narrative of Waste Land, where the film itself becomes an artwork made from waste. In conclusion, this essay interprets Waste Land as a film that presents an ethic of care from the perspective of econarratology. Audiences encounter depicted “environments” within the film's narrative, influencing their real-life attitudes and actions. Ethical caregiving starts with understanding humans as “relational beings.” waste, the waste pickers, and the audience are all intertwined within the relationships depicted in Waste Land. The audience learns that waste pickers’ stories, reshaped through recognition, are not just theirs alone but part of our neighbors’ stories, not distinct from our own. Not only waste pickers but also vulnerable beings around us are interconnected with us. Waste Land urges audiences to take an interest in their neighbors’ lives, actively respond to them, and confront their own lives.
