Abstract
Ecocinema, the concept proposed by Scott MacDonald in 2004, is drived by a kind of the ‘ecology of connection’ that privileges the ‘nonhuman turn’ of humanities and social sciences, one that raises viewers’ awareness of, sometimes their participation in, ecologically significant issues. This paper aims to discuss Agnès Varda’s films and installations of the 21st century at a time of the paradigm shift to digital technology and ecocinema, in the light of her methods of ‘recycling’ to appropriate the technology and to venture into the strategies of ‘participation and sharing.’ To this end, it investigates her The Gleaners and I in terms of her uses of Sony DV camera to practice her recycling, reuse, and recombination as digital collector, on one hand. It also examines Varda’s installations of the Cabin series in terms of their intermedial strategies (reuse of found footage and readymade) to recycle the deserted materials of film in the celluloid era, With these two lines of investigation, this paper suggests its three key points. First, it aims to overcome the limitation of the existing studies’ reliance upon ecocriticism and the Anthropocene discourse through approaching films of ecocinema from the materialist and media-oriented perspectives. Second, it asks what impacts the ‘nonhuman turn’ of the project of ecocinema has on the concepts of film image and spectatorship that still presuppose anthropocentricism and correlationism. And finally, it reconceptualizes the issue of the ‘artistic recycling’ of moving images in the digital age where the boundaries between subject and object and between professional and amateur have fundamentally been eroded, in terms of her ideas of ‘participation and sharing.’
