쓰레기로의 전회 가능성과 생태적 상상력 : 영화 <월-E>와 <굴뚝마을의 푸펠>을 중심으로

이 글은 영화에 나타나는 쓰레기의 이미지에 주목하여 이 이미지를 변화시키는 상상력의 작용 양상을 밝히고, 이 상상력을 생태적 상상력으로 이해하고자 했다. 이로써 ‘쓰레기로의 전회’의 가능성을 탐문하고자 했다. 서론에서는 다음과 같은 질문에 답을 하는 방식으로 논의를 전개해나갔다. 영화에서 나타나는 쓰레기에 왜 주목하는가? ‘쓰레기로의 전회’는 무엇이고, 이를 영화에서 어떻게 살펴볼 수 있는가? ‘쓰레기로의 전회’ 가능성과 생태적 상상력을 어떻게 연결할 수 있는가? 다음으로 본론에서는 두 영화에서 쓰레기의 의미가 어떻게 변화해가는지 분석해보고자 했다. 이를 위해 먼저 쓰레기의 이미지와 결합하는 불의 이미지에 주목하였다. 다음으로 이 불의 이미지와 쓰레기의 이미지가 결합하는 상상력을 추적하면서 이 상상력이 쓰레기의 이미지를 변형하는 원리로 작동하고 있음을 밝혔다. 이 상상력의 양상을 도식화하면, <월-E>에서 춤추기의 상상력은 쓰레기의 이미지를 온기의 이미지로 변형시켰고, <굴뚝마을의 푸펠>에서 친구 되기의 상상력은 쓰레기의 이미지를 별빛의 이미지로 변형시켰다. 이상으로 불의 이미지의 특성을 경유하여 쓰레기의 이미지를 살피는 수사학은 생태 위기에 맞서기 위해 인간 본성의 중요한 힘인 상상력을 회복하여 미래로 열린 생태학을 모색해보려는 기획이다. 이를 위해 쓰레기와 인간이 공생할 수 있는 윤리적 상상력을 찾고자 이 상상력을 작동시키는 능동적이고 창조적인 이미지들을 추적하고자 하였다.
Abstract
This article focused on the image of waste appearing in the movie Wall-E and Poupelle of Chimney Town to reveal the action pattern of the imagination that changes this image, and tried to understand this imagination as an ecological imagination. As a result, it was intended to explore the possibility of a ‘turn to waste’. In the introduction, the discussion was conducted by answering the following questions. Why do you pay attention to the garbage in the movie? What is the 'Turn to Waste' and how can you look at it in the movie? How can we link the possibility of 'turn to Waste' to ecological imagination? Next, in the main body, we tried to analyze how the meaning of waste changes in the two films. To this end, we first paid attention to the image of fire combined with the image of waste. Next, it was revealed that this imagination was working as a principle to transform the image of waste, tracking the imagination that combines the image of fire and the image of waste. Schematic illustration of this aspect of imagination shows that the imagination of dancing in “Wall-E” transformed the image of garbage into an image of warmth, and the imagination of being friends in “Poupelle of Chimney Town” transformed the image of waste into an image of starlight. In conclusion, the rhetoric of examining the image of waste through the characteristics of the image of fire is a plan to restore imagination, an important force of human nature, and seek open ecology to the future in order to cope with the ecological crisis. To this end, in order to find an ethical imagination in which waste and humans can coexist, we tried to track the active and creative images that operate this imagination.
