이 논문은 그동안 연구에서 소홀했던 권정생의 수필을 대상으로 생태의식의 양상을 분석한 것이다. 권정생은 일제강점기, 한국전쟁, 산업화를 관통하면서 극심한 가난과 신체적 고통 속에서도 파괴되는 자연과 생태의 문제를 다양한 측면에서 작품화했다. 첫째, 권정생의 수필은 자연과 생명이 내재된 지혜에 대한 찬탄을 보여주었다. 또한 자연과 생태의 파괴가 결국 인간 스스로 자멸을 초래할 수 있음을 경고하였다. 둘째, 권정생의 수필에는 과학기술을 바탕으로 한 물질문명이 우리 사회를 행복하게 할 수 없음을 분명히 한다. 그리고 하느님의 나라는 인간과 이웃 되는 동식물들과 공존할 때 이룩될 수 있다고 보았으며 인간은 자연을 잘 관리하는 청지기라는 기독교적 생태사상을 보여주었다. 셋째, 자연과 생태 파괴를 극복하기 위해서는 ‘자발적 가난’으로 돌아가야 한다고 주장하였다. 그리고 물질적 평등에 기반한 인간과 인간의 관계와 인간과 자연의 공생의 삶을 지향하였다. 권정생의 생태수필은 산업화의 문제가 표면화되기 이전에 작품화했다는 점에서 선구적이며 현실적인 대안을 구체화했다는 점에서도 의미가 크다.
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the patterns of Gwon Jeong-saeng's ecological consciousness in his essays that have not received much research attention. Gwon dealt with the issues of nature and ecology being destroyed and created works out of them in various aspects amid his extreme poverty and physical suffering, living through the Japanese colonial rule, Korean War, and industrialization. First, his essays showed his admiration for wisdom with inherent nature and life in it. In his essays, Gwon warned against the possibility of the destruction of nature and ecology causing the self-destruction of human beings. Secondly, Gwon makes sure that a material civilization based on science and technology cannot make our society happy in his essays. He believed that the coexistence of human beings and their neighboring animals and plants could create a God's country and displayed his Christian ecological idea that human beings were good stewards of nature. Finally, Gwon insisted that people should return to "voluntary poverty" to overcome the destruction of nature and ecology, seeking after human-human relations based on material equality and symbiotic human-nature life. Gwon's ecological essays are pioneering in that they depicted the issues of industrialization even before they surfaced, holding huge significance by proposing specific and realistic alternatives.
