Abstract
The traditional aspect of patrons offering competitive support to artists and the relationship between artists and patrons based on contracts have recently shifted. This research focuses on how performance artist Gim, who actively works overseas, created a human sponsorship network at the individual level instead of relying on governmental subsidies as most modern Korean artists do. We used social capital theory as an analytical framework and applied qualitative research methods—participant observation, in-depth interview and online published documents such as newspaper articles, blogs, and personal online postings in SNS—to collect the data. We included artist Gim, his patrons (n=42), and foreign patrons (n=75) as research participants. As a result, artist Gim’s international activities were significantly related to the extension of his human networks and gatekeepers. Secondly, the contingency factor amplifying his social capital was his active and independent tendency of using SNS and maneuvering features of performing arts. Thirdly, the types of social capital that Gim built with his patrons were (1) bridging social capital, (2) bridged-bonding social capital, (3) bonding social capital, and (4) bonded-bridging social capital, which showed differences in the aspect of exchange. Lastly, the modern concept of patrons has extended to people who are friends and acquaintances; this means that the motive of sponsorship is not to seek economic profit but compassion and sharing his artistic view, including supporting Gim’s talent, guaranteeing artwork opportunities, and emotional support.
