Abstract
This study examines the Tang-Song Eight Masters Poetry Selection (TS8; 1444), compiled under Prince Anpyeong during King Sejong’s reign, to first clarify—in Chapter 2—the background of poet selection in early Joseon and the ways in which Song poetics were received; on this basis, Chapter 3 presents an intratextual analysis of how liqu (理趣) is realized in the anthology’s Song-dynasty nature poems. Chapter 2 reconstructs the nexus of royal/Chipyeonjeon erudite norms and the civil-service examination textbook system, and maps how the composition rule “wen must emulate Qin-Han, shi must emulate High Tang” became conjoined with the Song ancient-prose spirit (zhishi, dianya). It further shows how Dongpo fever and Wang-poem fever, Anpyeong’s Wang Anshi–leaning selections, the inter-poet networks among the four Song figures, and the impact of the Ancient-Style Prose Movement together led early Joseon’s selection/compilation poetics to selectively receive and re-contextualize Song poetics. Chapter 3 reads the selected poems through a three-step path—image (material motif) → emotion → liqu—to reconstruct the compiler’s aesthetic orientation at the textual level. It differentiates Song liqu into: (1) “wisdom-of-liqu” (智慧之理), wherein everyday motifs of flowers–birds–trees guide practical discernment and conduct; and (2) “enlightenment-of-liqu” (玄悟之理), wherein scenes of lakescape–mountain temples–pavilions lead to wu (nondual insight). In the first group, Ouyang Xiu’s “畫眉鳥” (Huamei Bird) and Wang Anshi’s “雁” (Wild Geese) articulate complementary ethics of freedom and contentment; Huang Tingjian’s “蠟梅” (Wintersweet) and Su Shi’s “紅梅三首 其二” foreground the paired virtues of plain genuineness and adversity-overcoming. Wang Anshi’s “竹裏” (In the Bamboo) and Su Shi’s “次韻子由綠筠堂” (Following Ziyou’s Rhyme: Green-Bamboo Hall) show that even with the same bamboo motif, one realizes a lifestyle ethic of seclusion–ease, while the other affirms cultivation–elegance–conviviality. In the second group, Su Shi opens a horizon of unity through crisis experience and the inclusive claim of “Altogether fitting(總相宜)” , whereas Wang Anshi achieves submergent unity and thorough comprehension via resonant cloud–water optics and reframing of visual field (由塞見通). By supplementing bibliography- and literary-history-centered discussions with textual aesthetic analysis, the study demonstrates—on the level of selected texts—the junction between early Joseon compilation poetics and the reception history of Song poetry.
