본 연구는 만55세 이상 고령층을 대상으로 COVID-19 동안 인터넷 이용의 양적․질적 변화와 인터넷 이용결과 간의 구조적 관계를 분석하였다. 이를 위해 『2020 디지털 정보격차 실태조사』 원자료를 활용하여 가설을 검증하였다. COVID-19 기간에 고령층의 인터넷 이용량은 증가하였고, 인터넷 이용의 다양성과 온라인 참여활동도 증가한 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 가설검증 결과, 고령층의 인터넷 이용량 변화는 인터넷 이용의 다양성 변화와 온라인 참여활동 변화에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 질적 측면에서 인터넷 이용의 다양성 변화와 온라인 참여활동 변화는 인터넷 이용결과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다. 하지만 인터넷 이용량 변화는 인터넷 이용결과에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 다만 인터넷 이용량 변화는 인터넷 이용의 다양성 및 온라인 참여활동 변화 등의 질적 이용을 매개로 인터넷 이용결과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 본 연구에서는 고령층의 디지털 격차 해소와 인터넷 이용결과 개선을 위한 이론적․정책적 시사점을 제시하였다.
Abstract
The purposes of this study are to analyze the structural relationship between changes in amount and qualitative of Internet use and Internet use outcomes of the elderly (55+) during COVID-19 pandemic and to discuss the implications. We used the raw data that the ‘2020 Survey on the Digital Divide’ conducted by the National Information Society Agency. The results indicated that the amount of Internet use among the elderly increased, and the diversity of Internet use and online participation activities also increased during COVID-19. The results showed that changes in amount of Internet use of the elderly had positive effect on the changes in Internet use diversities and changes in online participation activities, the changes in Internet use diversities and online participation activities as a qualitative usage had positive effect on the Internet use benefits. It is, however, found that changes in amount of Internet use had negative effect on the benefits of Internet use. In addition, the changes in Internet use diversity and online participation activities as a qualitative usage mediated the positive relationship between changes in amount of Internet use and Internet use benefits. Based on these results, this study discussed theoretical and policy implications for bridging the digital divide and improving the Internet use benefits of the elderly.
