Abstract
Since the 2010s, a key trend in modern Korean literary studies has been the exploration of Cold War culture. This approach views post-World War II Korea as a nation under America’s Asia-Pacific dominance, framing Korea as a neo-colony and indicating continuity with its earlier colonial status. The rise of cultural studies focusing on colonial literature through a postcolonial lens, especially after the 1990s’ surge in Cold War history research, reflects a recognition of Korea’s enduring colonial modernity and its impact on Korean identity. The consistent engagement with postcolonial and Cold War cultural theories represents a critical effort to address and navigate the empire’s long durée. This discourse benefits from transpacific critique, a methodological stance for challenging long-standing imperial narratives. This paper underscores efforts to go beyond these narratives, such as conceptualizing Asia or East Asia as bases for decolonial thought. It warns against oversimplifying the empire-colonized nation binary, a simplification this critique could inadvertently reinforce. To avoid this, the paper calls for a reflective critique of the modern worldview, advocating for an examination of planetarity as an ideology. Modern Korean literary studies, it argues, should surpass mere global or intercultural discussions, delving into the potential of ‘trans’ as a concept that transcends traditional boundaries and discourses, thus redefining modern Korean literature’s essence within a global and historical framework.
