Abstract

This study examines the social interaction and financial stability of middle-aged and elderly households in South Korea and conducts a comprehensive contemplation on the influence of social interaction on the household’s financial stability on the basis of the social capital theory. For this purpose, the seventh Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA) in 2018 was analyzed and a total of 2,260 households were used in the final analysis. The main study results are summarized below. First, the economic interaction of the middle- aged and elderly households was investigated focusing on the private transfer. Out of the total subjects, 66.8% received supports from their offspring, parents, or other family members with an average amount of 2.78 million KRW. Meanwhile, 16.2% of the middle-aged and elderly households provided private transfer of an average amount of 8.94 million KRW. Although the households who receive private transfer occupied the majority share, the average amount of those who provide private transfer was larger than that of the recipient households. In case of the public transfer, 1,601 households (70.8%) received public transfer, implying that most of the middle-aged and elderly households were receiving benefit from the public transfer. Specifically, 867 households (38.4%) received public pension and 1,158 households (51.2%) received public aid. Second, in an examination of the non-economic interaction of the middle-aged and elderly households, 43.9% of the research subjects maintained marital status and the number of offspring that they meet at least once a week was 1.35. Most of the middle-aged and elderly people were involved in about one social activity.Third, the financial stability of the middle-aged and elderly households was investigated using simple indicators, the average monthly household income of the middle-aged and elderly households was 1.99 million KRW, and the average monthly consumption expenditure was 1.43 million KRW. It was found that over 55% of the middle-aged and elderly households canceled savings in order to solve the lack of consumption expenditure Fourth, the financial stability of the middle-aged and elderly household was investigated based on the financial ratio index. In case of family income and expenditure index, approximately 51.1% of the households met the conformity standard. In case of debt-related indicators, majority of the households met the conformity standard. On the contrary, very few households met the conformity standard of the total propensity to save index and financial asset weight index. This implies that the middle-aged and elderly households have saving and liquidity- related problems. Fifth, as a result of the effect of the social interaction on financial stability, some variables appeared to be factors affecting financial stability and, the probability to meet the conformity standard of the family income and expenditure index and the total propensity to save index was higher when they do not receive private aid.
