Abstract

The financial soundness of middle-aged and older households evolves heterogeneously overtime, and identifying its trajectories and predictors is essential for effective policy intervention. Using longitudinal data from waves 3, 5, 7, and 9 (2009-2021) of the Korea Retirement andIncome Study (KReIS), this study applies Latent Class Growth Analysis (LCGA) to classifytrajectories of financial soundness among 1,029 household heads aged 50-64 and examinestheir predictors. Financial soundness is measured using a multidimensional Household FinancialComposite Index (HFCI). Three distinct trajectories emerge: High-level, Rapid Decline (2.04%),Low-level, Maintenance (48.30%), and Lowest-level, Improvement (49.66%). Most householdstend to maintain their financial status, whereas a small “High-level, Rapid Decline” groupexperiences rapid deterioration from an initially favorable position, underscoring the need forearly warning systems. Complex-sample logistic regression indicates that debt reduction and independent economiccapacity consistently emerge as key predictors. Moreover, systematic old-age preparation—including physical/mental health and private pension participation—plays an important role inimproving financial soundness. Incorporating economic old-age preparation variables significantlyincreases model explanatory power and attenuates the effects of some sociodemographic andfinancial factors, suggesting that preparation for later life functions as an independent factorthat mitigates structural disadvantages. By applying LCGA to 12 years of panel data, the study empirically demonstrates the dynamicheterogeneity of financial soundness among middle-aged and elderly households, lending robustsupport to the Life-Cycle Hypothesis, Status Maintenance Hypothesis, and CumulativeAdvantage/Disadvantage framework. The findings provide empirical grounds for early identificationof high-risk households and the design of tailored, tier-specific interventions, offering meaningfulpolicy implications for enhancing the financial soundness of middle-aged and elderly households.
