자유선택활동시간의 놀이에 대한 교사와 어머니의 인식: 영상자료를 활용한 심층면담

유아교사는 자유선택활동시간이 유아교육현장의 특성을 가장 잘 대표할 수 있는 시간이며, 이 시간에 이루어지는 놀이가 중요하다는 것을 잘 알고 있다. 하지만 유아교육현장은 어머니들의 요구에 민감하게 반응하기 때문에 놀이에 대한 어머니의 인식은 자유선택활동 시간의 운영여부에 영향을 준다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 자유선택활동시간의 놀이 상황을 촬영한 동영상자료를 심층면담의 도구로 활용하여 놀이에 대한 교사와 어머니의 인식을 알아보았다. 이 연구방법은 비디오를 활용한 문화기술지연구(video-cued multivocal ethnography)에서 착안하였다. 심층면담은 교사와 어머니에게 놀이의 의미에 대한 일반적인 질문으로 시작한다. 다음은 연구참여자들이 연구자가 한 유아교육기관에서 이루어진자유선택활동시간의 놀이를 12분으로 편집한 영상자료를 본다. 그리고 연구참여자들은 영상자료에 대한 반응을 바탕으로 놀이에 대한 의미에 대해서 다시 이야기를 나누는 방식으로 심층면담이 진행된다. 영상자료의 활용을 통하여 교사와 어머니들은 유아가 주도하는 놀이의 가치와 자유놀이시간의 놀이의 의미에 대하여 다시 생각해볼 수 있었다.
Abstract
The significance of play during free choice activity time is well understood by the earlychildhood teachers as play is the key for early childhood education practices. Unliketeachers, Korean parents may have different understanding about play due to their highexpectation about learning through hard work, not play. Thus this study aims to explorehow early childhood teachers and mothers perceive young children’s play during freechoice activity time through video-cued in-depth interview. This method was based onthe Video-cued Multivocal Ethnographic Research. The teachers and mothers in this studywere first asked to think and talk about the meaning of play for young children. Thenthey were asked to watch the 12-minute-long video clips in which the first author of thisstudy edited to capture the scenes of play during free choice activity time in one earlychildhood education setting in Seoul, Korea. Then the participants were engaged in theconversations about the meaning of play based on their reactions about the video. Thisvideo-cued in-depth interview helped teachers and mothers to rethink the meaning ofplay and the value of child-led play during free choice activity time.
