Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate gender differences in major variables to influence the consumer's purchase intention on fair trade(FT) products through the Modified Theory of Planned Behavior(MTPB) The data were obtained from 615 university students. The major results are follows. Structural equation analysis indicated that compared to Theory of Planned Behavior(TPB), the Modified Theory of Planned Behavior increased the explained variance in purchase intention from 50.8% to 61.8%. Effects on university student' intentions to purchase FT products via the Modified Theory of Planned Behavior model with gender as the most distal variable indicated that gender had direct effect on intentions, and its effect on intentions was meditated through attitude, ethical obligation and ethical identity. Compared to male group, female groups reported more favorable consumer attitude, higher ethical obligation and ethical identity, and stronger purchase intention. Moderating analysis showed that gender did not moderate the association between the model constructs and purchase intention. The implications of the study are that consumer educators seeking to encourage university student' intentions to purchase FT products should consider gender differences and more emphasis should be on male. For educational interventions, more scientific results clarifying whether FT consumption can really effectively and consistently improve the living conditions of the producers in Third World countries might be useful. And in addition to educational and informational efforts on the benefits of the FT products, policy makers should also consider structural changes to ensure that FT product choice is also an easy choice to make.
