외국의 다문화영유아 언어교육과정 분석: 미국, 영국, 캐나다, 호주를 중심으로

초록

본 연구는 외국의 0-5세 다문화 언어교육의 비교 분석을 통하여 우리나라 다문화영유아 언어교육과정 개발을 위한 시사점을 도출하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 우리나라 보다 앞서서 다문화 사회를 경험한 미국, 영국, 캐나다, 호주의 영유아 언어교육을 대상으로 교육과정 구성의 핵심인 교육 목표, 내용, 방법, 평가를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 연구결과, 첫째, 각국(주)의 다문화 0-5세 언어교육은 평등권 차원에서 모든 유아를 대상으로 하며 이중언어 또는 다중언어교육을 목표로 하였다. 둘째, 내용 측면에서 0-5세 영유아 교육과정에서는 말과 글, 다양한 상징을 활용한 효과적인 의사소통을, 5세 K 교육과정에서는 학습언어 위주의 영어(현지어) 교육을 강조하였으며, 제2외국어 교과를 통해 모국어를 가르쳤다. 셋째, 다문화 언어교육방법은 이중 또는 다중언어 방법으로 몰입교육방법, 교과내용-언어 통합교육방법을 택하였고, 언어교육의 일반원칙 내에서 영어학습자를 위한 구체적인 지침이 제공되었다. 넷째, 평가는 평가교사에 의한 관찰을 기본으로 언어발달뿐만 아니라 모든 발달(교과)영역에서 이루어 졌고, 구체적인 성취목표가 제시되었다. 이러한 결과를 활용하여 우리나라 0-5세 유아교육과정에서 다문화 언어교육을 어떻게 통합시키고 체계화, 구체화할 것인지에 대한 논의가 필요하다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to draw up suggestions for the development of multicultural early childhood language curriculum in Korea through comparative analysis of multicultural language education of 0-5 years old in western countries. To this end, we looked into early childhood language education of the USA, the UK, Canada, and Australia, focusing on educational goals, content, methods and evaluations, which are key components of the curriculum. The results of the are as follows: First, multicultural language education in each country provided all children for equal rights. Second, in terms of content, curriculum for 0-5 years old emphasized effective communication using speaking, written words, and various symbols, while Kindergarten curriculum focused on English (local language) education and taught mother tongues through second/foreign language instructions. Third, a dual or multilingual method was adopted, such as immersion education, curriculum contents-language integrated education method, and specific guidelines for English learners were provided within the general principle of language education. Fourth, evaluation was conducted not only in language development but also in all areas of development (curriculum) and specific achievement goals were presented based on observation by evaluating teacher. Based on these findings, we need to consider how to integrate, systematize and materialize multicultural language education into Korean early childhood curriculum.
