Abstract

This study aimed to explore ways to enhance the field competency of preservice early childhood teachers by qualitatively analyzing the experiences of students who participated in classes utilizing online-based observations and teaching strategies linked to practical training. The research participants included 48 junior students and two instructors from the Early Childhood Education program at B University in A City, Gyeonggi Province. The action research was conducted during the class improvement process of Curriculum Education Theory and School Field Practice, offered in the first and second semesters of the 2024 academic year, respectively. Data were collected on pre-and post-action surveys, open-ended responses, class notes, and observation records, and were analyzed using qualitative category analysis. In the first phase of implementation, students involved joint evaluation of mock teaching sessions and analyzed recorded kindergarten observations with a focus on human and material connections. In the second phase, students involved real-time meetings with teachers and conducted direct observations of kindergartens and daycare centers in terms of human and material connections. Changes in student experiences through this implementation were categorized into three main categories: (1) Emotional grounding for taking the first steps as a teacher, (2) Concrete preparation experiences for field practice, and (3) Expanded learning expansion through online-based indirect experiences with a total of nine subcategories. This findings suggest that online-based field connection strategies can effectively enhance the practical competence of pre-service teachers in the early childhood education. Furthermore, this study highlights the potential for institutional use of online-mediated strategies as a supplementary means of traditional field experience.
