또래조정을 통한 갈등해결에 관한 연구

초록

갈등은 우리 사회에 있어 자연스러운 현상이다. 긍정적인 방식으로 해결된 갈등은 사회의 발전과 변화를 위한 계기로 작용하지만 부정적인 방식으로 해결된 갈등은 사회의 분열과 혼란을 초래한다. 갈등의 건설적 해결과정을 통하여 개인과 사회가 발전할 수 있다는 인식을 바탕으로 갈등과 관련된 문제해결을 위해 적극적으로 행동하는 것은 민주사회의 시민으로서 중요한 자질이다. 갈등해결 과정에 참여함으로써 책임 있는 개인으로서 사회적․정치적 활동을 할 수 있는 기회를 얻게 되며, 이러한 과정을 통하여 민주사회에 필요한 시민적 자질과 능력을 갖출 수 있게 된다. 또래조정이란 대안적 분쟁해결 방안으로서의 조정을 통해 학생 상호 간 갈등을 해결하는 것이다. 또래조정은 자신과 비슷한 또래와의 상호작용이 이루어지기 때문에 갈등해결을 위한 협동적 환경 조성이 보다 원활하게 구성될 수 있다. 또한 일정한 절차와 단계를 바탕으로 실시되기 때문에 절차적 합리성을 가지고 있으며, 갈등 당사자 모두가 동의하는 내용으로 해결방안이 도출되기 때문에 내용의 합리성을 내포하고 있다. 또래조정은 이러한 특징으로 인하여 갈등해결에 있어 효과적인 방법이며, 또래조정 과정은 갈등인식력, 의사소통력, 쟁점규명력, 대안모색력, 실행․평가력과 같은 갈등해결력에 영향을 준다는 것을 알 수 있다.

Abstract

Conflict is a natural part of society. Resolving conflicts in a positive way paves the way for social development and change, while settling them in a destructive way results in social division and disruption. It is an important quality of a citizen in a democratic society to make proactive efforts to resolve conflicts based on the awareness that individual and social development is promoted when conflicts are managed constructively. Indeed, students can have the opportunity to participate in social and political activities through the process of conflict resolution, thus acquiring the qualities and capabilities expected of a good citizen in a democratic society. Peer mediation is a way of resolving conflicts among students by means of mediation with the help of peer mediator. This study defines peer mediation as the use of mediation that is an alternative dispute resolution in order to deal with mutual conflicts among students. It becomes easier to create an cooperative environment for conflict resolution as peer mediation facilitates interactions among students who have much in common. Peer mediation involves rationality in terms of it’s process because it is implemented on the basis of certain procedures and steps. It also involves rationality in terms of it’s content because the participants concerned with a conflict try to reach an agreement which satisfies everyone. Proceeding from this, one can logically assume that peer mediation is a rational mean of handling conflict.
