Abstract
This paper aims to introduce the collected works of Gyeomsan Kim Jeong-gi (Kim Gu-gon, Kim Jong-o), who was designated as a person of merit for independence, and to introduce his life, academic background, and his Chinese poetry. Jeong-gi is his changed name. Gyeomsan was a Confucian scholar from Cheongdo. He studied under No Sang-jik, who inherited Heo Jeon’s academic lineage, and joined Jaam Academic Society in1 October 1909. When No Sang-jik went into exile in Manchuria in 1911, he followed him and returned. Upon his return, he studied under Jo Geung-seop, a disciple of Samiheon Jang Bok-chu, for about 20 years. Based on the Six Classics and the Four Books, he deeply trusted and admired the scholarship of Song Dynasty Zhou Dunyi, Zhang Zai, Zheng Yi, and Zhu Xi. Through academic exchanges with Seong Sun-yeong, Ha Seong-jae, Byun Young-man, and Lee Byeong-ho, he internalized the value system of Neo-Confucianism and devoted himself to protecting Confucianism. Although he left behind only a few works, his collected works contain letters exchanged with his fellow writers, Q&A on Neo-Confucianism with his teacher Jo Geung-seop, 「Dokyeokchagi」, 「Bieunseol」, and poems for his teacher, allowing us to confirm the academic foundation of his thoughts and exchanges. Using place names such as 「Gyeongseong」, 「Pyeongyang」, 「Andong-hyeon」, 「Bongcheon」 and 「Musun」 he sang and reminisced about the territory of our country and the Manchurian region that was the base of the independence movement, and through 「Seokgulam」, 「Algakganmyo」 and 「Noryang Yuksinmyo」 he expressed pride in being a descendant of Kim Yu-sin and wrote poems for his teacher, such as commemorating the six martyred ministers, looking back on history and reflecting on the current reality. In 1919, Gyeomsan willingly devoted himself to the independence movement by signing the Paris Book of Records along with 13 of No Sang-jik’s disciples, following his teacher No Sang-jik’s teaching. Jo Geung-seop acknowledged him as his friend, and his friends praised him as a gentleman who was humble and meek. He was a practitioner who practiced Confucianism as he learned it, and for him, Zhu Xi’s learning was not a fixed theory but an active energy that was released to overcome the dark situation of the Japanese colonial period. The signature of the pa-lijangseo was the result of Confucian teachings passed from Heo Jeon to No Sang-jik, and it was impossible without the determination to reveal his identity to the world and endure the harsh persecution of the Japanese and the desperate sacrifice of risking his life.
