Abstract
The life of Jukcheon Kim Jin-gyu unfolded amid the political turbulence of late Joseon, particularly under the repeated upheavals of royal purges known as hwanguk. As a result, he endured a tumultuous career marked by cycles of exile and reinstatement. Among these, his exile on Geoje Island (1689–1694) stands out as a period of extreme external isolation and inner suffering, but also as the peak of his literary productivity. In fact, more than half of his 562 surviving poems were composed during this time, including his major works such as 「Namjeong (南征)」, 「Pangok Guga (盤谷九歌)」, and 「Pangok huguga (盤谷後九歌)」. The poems written during his exile in Geoje reflect, first, a profound self-reflection reached through the solitary and painful life of an exile. Second, they express a deep emotional bond with his family and homeland. Third, they document a form of literary self-sufficiency and subtle escape, as he turned to poetry and wine to endure and transcend his reality. Even in exile, Kim refined his inner world through poetry, interpreting his suffering while establishing a dignified and detached literary posture, free from the pursuit of fame or power. Ultimately, Kim Jin-gyu’s exile was not merely a record of political victimhood. Rather, it was an inner journey that united self-examination and literary accomplishment, and a rare testament to the spiritual height that exile literature can attain.
