Abstract

Agye Lee San-hae was a representative bureaucrat and scholar who lived in the mid-Joseon Dynasty. He served as a bureaucrat during the reign of King Seonjo, when factions began in earnest, and it is impossible to discuss the history of factional politics without Lee San-hae. This is because the period in which he held major official positions coincided with the period in which factions were formed. Therefore, it can be confirmed that there were various evaluations of Lee San-hae, including those of the time in which he lived and those of later generations. Lee San-hae's life can be learned in detail through the ‘Chronological biography’ included in the appendix of "AhgyeYugo". Most studies on Lee San-hae's life to date can be said to be centered on the ‘Chronological biography’ This paper examines Lee San-hae's life by focusing on the ‘Chronological biography’ of "AhgyeYugo" and Lee San-hae's ‘Epitaph’ by Beonam Chae Je-gong. This is an attempt to view his life in three dimensions by examining Lee San-hae's ‘Epitaph’ together with the ‘Chronological biography’. Next, in order to understand Lee San-hae's life more richly, we looked at his works. As mentioned, Lee San-hae's collected works include "AhgyeYugo." A large part of "AhgyeYugo" is ‘Giseongnok’, which he wrote during his exile in Pyeonghae. We can understand Lee San-hae's life in exile by focusing on ‘Giseongnok’. Based on the prose included in ‘Giseongnok’, we can understand his attitude of trying to overcome reality with a detached mind while thinking about his situation in exile. We can also see that he constantly thinks about real politics, the country, and the people. Lee San-hae differentiates the variations in his anthologies by using the names of the places where he lived as titles. Among them, this paper examines ‘Geolgwirok’ related to Boryeong, which can be considered Lee San-hae’s hometown. Boryeong is where Lee San-hae lived with his father when he was young. In ‘Geolgwirok’, we examine poems related to Mt. Goman, where his parents and uncle Lee Ji-ham’s graves are located. Mt. Goman is Lee San-hae’s hometown and a precious place where he can feel his parents. Finally, we can confirm that the poems of Lee San-hae and his son Lee Gyeong-jeon are included in the “Shinanhyeonji”, which can be called the local history of Boryeong. Through the three poems included in “Shinanhyeonji”, we can see the figure of a Confucian scholar who left Seoul to spend leisurely time in his hometown, expressing gratitude for the king's grace, and enjoying a life of contentment. I think that writing in places that had special meanings in Lee San-hae's life, such as Pyeonghae and Boryeong, will help us understand him in various ways.
