Abstract

Yi San-hae(李山海), a prominent politician and writer of the mid-Joseon period, held the position of Prime Minister at the outbreak of the Imjin War(壬辰倭亂). Although he actively led the royal court’s retreat to Uiju during the Imjin War, he faced harsh public criticism and was subsequently exiled to Pyeonghae(Uljin). During his approximately three-year exile, he composed 483 poems, which were later compiled in 󰡔Giseongnok(箕城錄)󰡕. This paper categorizes the inner consciousness reflected in Yi San-hae’s exile poetry into four thematic types and explores how each was vividly embodied through poetic expression. First, the theme of “loyalty to the king and a consciousness of gratitude” occupies a significant place in Yi San-hae’s exile poetry. He frequently expressed this inner state by symbolically employing natural elements such as the sun, moon, stars, rain, and clouds. At times, even while observing ordinary landscapes, he revealed a deep sense of gratitude toward the king-suggesting that this emotional preoccupation prevented him from fully appreciating the natural scenery around him. The theme of “loneliness and sorrow in a foreign land” emerges as one of the most prominent emotional states among exiled individuals. Yi San-hae visualized this inner consciousness through various poetic strategies: by invoking figures from ancient myths such as Qu Yuan(屈原) and drawing parallels with his own situation; by reflecting on his past deeds to resist the injustices of both past and present; and by symbolically associating memories with notions of weight or length to convey emotional depth. The theme of “self-restraint and vigilance” reflects Yi San-hae’s conscious effort to moderate his sorrow in exile, preventing it from turning into emotional excess or fanaticism. This inner awareness also entailed avoiding reliance on non-Confucian thought, remaining silent on current political affairs, and being cautious about the potential circulation of his poetry. Yi San-hae conveyed this mindset by referring to historical figures such as Ruan Ji(阮籍), often highlighting his own difference from them, or by expressing his restraint more directly. The themes of “trauma of war and criticism of reality” reflect the poet’s disapproval of how both the Chinese and Joseon governments responded to the Japanese invasions, as well as his condemnation of the tyranny of local officials. Yi San-hae expressed this critical perspective through a range of techniques: invoking historical facts and classical texts, skillfully blending direct and cynical tones, interweaving narrative and lyrical modes, and using comparison and irony to highlight the grim realities of the time. This discussion is significant as it reveals the consciousness orientation of an intellectual exiled during the outbreak of the Imjin War, along with the literary creation methods that arose from that experience.
