Abstract
This study proposes a strategy for linking political participation with constitutional education in social studies by utilizing education on constitutional history. Recognizing constitutional education as a key component of democratic citizenship education, the aim of this research is to move beyond a solely cognitive approach and emphasize its role as a bridge to active civic engagement. To this end, the study critically examines the goals and directions of constitutional education, identifying the limitations of its implementation to date. It also analyzes the meaning and objectives of political participation as addressed in the social studies curriculum, highlighting shortcomings in current achievement standards. Based on this analysis, the study identifies the characteristics of constitutional history education and suggests educational strategies including the selection of specific learning objectives to effectively connect it with political participation. This research represents an initial effort to integrate constitutional education, traditionally treated as a fragmented component of legal education, with political participation a central theme in political education. Ultimately, it aims to lay the groundwork for developing instructional designs and teaching-learning methods that can be applied in actual classroom settings to foster students’ political participation competencies through constitutional education in social studies.
