Abstract
Korean social work educators and social workers have recently begun to recognize the importance of women-centered social practice and the gender-sensitive perspective in social work practice. In spite of this change, gender issues and social work practice with women are neither made prominent nor recognized in more than one of selective courses in Korean social work education. The aim of this study is to examine social work students' perceptions on and their participation in a campaign toward an abolition of articles on heads of the family in the Family Law. Also, the study aims to examine the students' attitudes on gender-roles and thereby to surmise how much social work education affects students in terms of gender- sensitive perspectives. The subjects were 517 individuals consisted of 58 workers in organizations for women's issues, 306 social work students, and 153 sociology students all around the country. The subjects answered the 30-item questionnaire. The results showed that, as a variable, the sex of the students was more important than their major in determining their attitudes on gender-roles. Thus, it was conjectured that the reason students showed differences in terms of knowledge and attitudes on the articles on heads of families was due to their sexes and not to their education. Implications for social work education are discussed.
