본 연구에서는 먼저 대학 글쓰기 교육에서 범교과적 글쓰기(WAC, Writing across the curriculum, 이하 WAC)의 등장배경과 개념을 정리하였다. 특히 WAC의 개념에 대해서는 다음의 두 가지 방법을 통해 정의하였다. 첫째, 여러 선행연구에서 연구자들이 정의한 WAC의 개념을 정리․종합하는 방법, 둘째, WAC를 WID(Writing in the disciplines)와 비교하여 정의하는 방법이다. WAC의 개념에 대한 연구자들의 정의는 조금씩 다르다. 그러나 연구자들이 공통적으로 공유하고 있는 관점은 대학에서 다양한 전공 및 교양 교과를 가로질러 글쓰기가 교육되고 활용되어야 한다는 것이다. 또한 연구자들은 대부분 WAC가 WID를 포함하고 있는 개념으로 보았다. 다음으로 이 연구에서는 WAC의 특성을 세 가지로 정리하였다. 첫째, 대학 교육에서 WAC프로그램의 시행 목적은 ‘학습을 위한 쓰기’와 ‘쓰기를 위한 학습’ 모두를 포함하고 있다. 둘째, WAC는 단순히 교과에 쓰기를 ‘첨가’시키는 것이 아니라 쓰기를 활용하여 전공/교양 교과의 커리큘럼을 ‘변형’시키는 프로그램이다. 셋째, WAC프로그램은 능동적인 학습자 중심의 교육 방법을 추구한다. 이러한 WAC프로그램이 대학 글쓰기 교육에서 운영되는 방식은 다음과 같다. 첫째, ‘글쓰기 집중 교과목’을 지정하여 운영하는 방식, 둘째, 글쓰기 교과와 전공 교과가 결합하여 운영되는 방식이다. 위와 같이 WAC에 대한 면밀한 검토를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 국내 대학 글쓰기 교육에의 WAC 도입과 관련하여 3가지 논의 사항을 제안하였다.
Abstract
This study meticulously investigated the concept and characteristics of Writing Across the Curriculum. First of all, this study reviewed history and concept of Writing across the curriculum through literature review in home and abroad. Especially, the concept of WAC was defined by two ways : 1) reviewing and synthesizing the concept of WAC in prior researches 2) defining the concept of WAC by comparing WAC with Writing in the disciplines(WID). The definition of WAC slightly differed one another. However, common perspective on writing was that writing should be taught and utilized across diverse major and liberal arts in college. they regard concept of WAC include that of WID. Next, This study reviewed three characteristics of WAC. First, the object of WAC program contains aspects of both writing to learn’ and ‘learning to write.’ Second, WAC programs are not additive, but transformative. Third, WAC pursue active learner-centered-education. WAC programs were operated in two ways : 1) writing courses “designated as Writing Intensive(WI)”, 2) writing courses “attached to other courses in the disciplines.” This study suggested three implication about college writing education through WAC.
