Abstract
The family structure of dual income earners has been prevalent. Sustaining employment is helpful for women to achieve economic independence, and family and society to get economically beneficial. Previous studies has been mainly focused on social and demographic factors predicting women’s employment; however, there is a lack of findings to elaborate potential impacts of marital conflict on women’s employment through psychological conditions. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the effect of marital conflict on employment with mediating effects of self-esteem and marital satisfaction among women with child(ren). Path analysis is conducted using data from the 2012 Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC) by Korea Institute of Child Care and Education(KICCE) under the Prime Minister. Total 862 women with at least more than one child are included in the final analysis. The results support the complete mediation effect of self-esteem between marital conflict and women’s employment, where marital conflict is negatively associated with self-esteem and marital-satisfaction, and self-esteem positively associated with women’s employment. Methodological limitations and implications for social work research and practice are also discussed.
