Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meanings and essence of the experiences of family care givers for their patient with terminal cancer. For this purpose, 7 family care givers from each family were interviewed in depth, and the results were analyzed via phenomenological method of Giorgi. The statements of interview were classified into 69 main points, 18 prominent topics, and 7 essential themes. The 7 essential themes were ‘surging distress caused by hopelessness', ’being weighted down by burden of care giving’, ‘mixed emotions of regret and annoyance in care giving’, ‘restoration of love of family’, ‘painful decision’, ‘consideration for each other’, ‘power of holistic care of hospice’. The core message underlies all these essential themes is summarized as ‘choice for a good death’. Based on the results, this study suggested some implications and institutional intervention strategies from social welfare perspective to better support the family care givers for their patient with terminal cancer.
