초록
Cicero, De Republica, II, 22, 39-40 is of great importance for an understanding of the Servian and the reformed centuriate assembly(Comitia Centuriata). This paper aims to reinterpret Cicero, De Republica, II, 22, 3940 in order to research Cicero’s understanding of the Comitia Centuriata. My points are as follows. Firstly, Suffragia may be interpreted as ‘the individual citizens’ votes.’ Secondly, quae discriptio refers to the Servian assembly(comitia), rationem refers to the reformed assembly, and nunc is temporal. Thirdly, it seems evident from the Cicero’s inclusion of the clause quod semper in re publica tenendeum est, ne plurimum valeant plurimi after curavit that he was not concerned to attribute the timocratic principle to the Servian centuriate assembly alone, but also to the centuriate assembly as it existed in his own day. Lastly, I think that Cicero explained the timocratic principle in the Comitia Centuriata in the focus on ‘the individual citizens' votes,’ not ‘the centuries.’ In conclusion, I think that Cicero’s chief object in De Republica, II, 22, 39-40 was to emphasize that it was a basic feature of the Servian and the reformed centuriate assembly that the wealthy and the few should enjoy greater influence in the voting than the poor and the many in the focus on ‘the individual citizens' votes(suffragia),’ not ‘the centurias(centurias).’
