학습 목적 글쓰기 교육 가능성 검토 - IB 교육과정 확장형 에세이 교육 사례를 중심으로

초록

이 글에서는 우리나라 작문교육을 한층 더 다양한 관점에서 바라보고 개선하기 위한 시도로 학습 목적 글쓰기(writing to learn)의 실현태로 간주할 수 있는 국제 바칼로레아(International Baccalaureate, IB) 교육과정 내 핵심 평가 도구인 확장형 에세이(extended essay) 교육 현장을 살펴보았다. 이 연구에서는 미국의 IB 교육과정 도입 학교 현장을 참관하고, 우리 작문 교육 차원에서 도움이 될 지점을 추려내었다. 미국 고등학교 자국어(English language arts) 교과 교실 현장에서 자료를 수집하고 분석하는 일은 문화기술지(ethnography) 방법론을 활용하였고, 연구자의 주관성을 덜어내고 보다 정치한 분석을 위하여 질적 분석 결과를 교차 검증하고 신뢰도 검정을 통해 재확인하였다. 이를 통해 ‘글쓰기 개념의 확장’, ‘지식의 재구성과 확장’으로 그 결과를 요약하고 우리 작문교육에 참고할 시사점을 논의하였다.

Abstract

This study explores teaching and learning within the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum through an examination of the extended essay to facilitate a broader and multi-dimensional understanding of Korean writing education from multiple perspectives. Using ethnographic approaches, I observed, collected, and analyzed data from a high school IB English language arts classroom regarding the implications that can be drawn for improving Korean writing instruction. The validity and reliability of the analytic processes were measured by statistical and qualitative cross-validation. The findings of this study are: 1) reconceptualization of writing and 2) knowledge reconstruction and extension. The instructional insights and implications for further research are also discussed.
