Abstract
Previous studies on writing tools tend to approach analog and digital writing tools dichotomously and have focused on determining which of the two leads to better writing results from the viewpoint of an evaluator or a teacher. The purpose of this study was to investigate how university students select and use writing tools and what convenience or inconvenience they feel when they use them. This exploratory study was conducted using an explanatory sequential design. A survey was conducted on 264 university students in Seoul, South Korea. Of the sample, the same research participants were interviewed from an exploratory research perspective, with 10 additional in-depth interviews. The results and discussion of this study are significant in that they serve as a basis for further understanding the writing behavior of diverse individuals, avoiding a dichotomous approach between analog and digital tools, and as a cornerstone for further research by closely exploring the current status of the use of writing tools.
