Abstract

The so-called Opening of the Mouth ritual was one of the most important rites in the two major ancient civilizations, Egypt and Mesopotamia. Despite the geographical distance between the two regions, the ritual in both cultures exhibits considerable similarities in its basic concept and procedure. Research on the ritual has mostly been carried out within the context of each individual field, Egyptology and Assyriology, respectively, but there are some scholars who argue for the influence of one culture over the other. A close examination, however, would demonstrate that these arguments are based on assumptions without any concrete evidence. This essay investigates whether there is any relationship between the Mouth Opening rituals as practiced in Egypt and Mesopotamia, or whether they originated and developed independently. In terms of methodology, this study distinguishes itself from the conventional way of research, that is to say, comparing similarities and differences regarding small details of a ritual; rather, it tries to delve into the fundamental disparities in the basic concept and world-views of the ritual on a synchronic and diachronic basis. Its results will demonstrate that the ritual as practiced in Egypt and Mesopotamia originated and developed independently without any sign of influence from or over each other, and furthermore explain the ritual's inception from the perspectives of the shared concept of afterlife of the two cultures.
