Abstract

This study aims to elucidate the religious and celestial symbolism inherent in ancient Egyptian coronations. In the ancient Egyptian kingdom, the accession/coronation of a pharaoh was not simply a political succession, but a core religious ritual signifying the restoration of cosmic order. Coronation was closely linked to the major festivals of the ancient Egyptian kingdom: the Sokar-Osiris festival, the Neheb-Kau festival, and the Wepet-Renpet festival. These festivals formed the framework for the coronation ceremony upon the death of the king. In this paper, the festivals are compared and analyzed to understand the ritual structure and symbolism of the coronation. In particular, the coronation centers on the narrative of the birth of Horus. This study examines how the death and resurrection of Osiris, the conception of Horus by the Hieros Gamos of Osiris and Isis, and the birth of Horus are interconnected through symbolic systems. Furthermore, the structure of the temple sanctuary, the concept of “Akhet,” and the ritual terminology found in the Pyramid Texts were analyzed. This study clarifies that the conception of Horus, through the celestial union of the constellation Orion, identified with the Osiris- embodied former king, and Sirius, the celestial goddess Isis, who accompanied the rising sun, was a crucial concept in ancient Egyptian religious thought. The conceived Horus sequentially identified with the planets near the sun, achieving union with the sun. This was the ultimate symbolism of coronation. In conclusion, the ancient Egyptian coronation was a complex ritual combining mythology, magic, and astronomy. The pharaoh's accession to the throne symbolized the renewal of the sacred cosmic order through the reenactment of the Osiris-Horus kingship myth. This study reexamines the coronation not as a mere political ritual, but as a religious and cultural phenomenon combining a magical worldview and celestial symbolism.
