Abstract
The most important discussions on the historical background of the Hyksos period in Egypt are about fixing the beginning of the Second Intermediate Period. Many scholars have agreed on its termination with the Hyksos expulsion by Ahmose ca. 1540 B.C.E. There is no consensus, however, for determining the beginning of the period in discussion. It has been generally accepted that the emergence of the 15th dynasty of the Hyksos ca. 1650 B.C.E. marked the new age. Re-examinations on the Hyksos scarabs of Yaqubhar and Sheshi have pointed to an earlier chronology, before the 15th dynasty. The recent discovery of 41 Khayan sealings and 9 Sobekhotep IV sealings at Edfu also led to the same conclusion. Many aspects and situations have pointed towards the earlier ascendancy of the Hyksos power ca. 1700 B.C.E. rather than the 15th dynasty. Thus, the following aspects such as the transfer of the capital from Itj-tawy to Thebes, the commercial interruption with Byblos, the change in burial customs similar to Canaan at Avaris, the introduction of Seth worship to the Hyksos kingdom, and the beginning of scarab production in Canaan, all indicate the emergence of Hyksos ascendancy ca. 1700 B.C.E.
