Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify whether the family communication affects social anxiety by mediating the environmental mastery and the self-acceptance of the adult non-disabled siblings of the people with developmental disabilities and to seek practical intervention scheme. The subjects of this study were 159 adult non-disabled siblings of the people with developmental disabilities living in Seoul. Data was collected through an offline survey. As a result of the study, the direct effect of family communication on social anxiety of non-disabled siblings was statistically significant. In addition, environmental mastery and self-acceptance of non-disabled siblings sequentially and statistically significantly mediated the relationship between family communication and social anxiety of non-disabled siblings. The singular mediating effect of self-acceptance of non-disabled siblings between family communication and social anxiety of non-disabled siblings was significant, whereas the singular mediating effect of environmental mastery of non-disabled siblings was not. Based on the results of this study, it was suggested that various interventions such as self-help groups and cognitive behavior programs to improve family communication, environmental mastery, and self-acceptance are needed to reduce social anxiety in non-disabled siblings.
