Abstract
This study investigated whether disability stigma affected life satisfaction in adult non-disabled siblings and whether the relationship between the two variables was moderated by social support from family of origin and from non-family. For the study, online surveys were administered to those with siblings with disabilities, aged 19 years old or over. The surveys consisted of disability stigma, life satisfaction, and social support scales. Data from 200 participants (62 males and 138 females) were analyzed by SPSS Macro Process. The study results are as follows; first, disability stigma perceived by adult non-disabled siblings had a significant negative effect on life satisfaction. Second, social support from family of origin had a significant moderating effect on the relationships between disability stigma and life satisfaction of non-disabled siblings. Finally, the moderating effect of social support from non-family members was also significant. Based on the findings of this study, when working with adult non-disabled sibling with low levels of life satisfaction, counselors need to explore whether their psychological difficulties were related to disability siblings, what was the disability stigma experienced directly or indirectly in the growth process, and how disability stigma and social support have interacted with each other and influenced their life satisfaction.
