Abstract
Adult siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities encounter diverse psychosocial challenges as they progress through the life course alongside their siblings. This study examines the relationship between affiliate stigma and smartphone dependency in adult siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities, with a particular focus on the mediating role of social avoidance and anxiety. The study participants were adult siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities residing in Seoul, South Korea. The survey was conducted from August to October 2020, and the final analysis included data from 161 respondents. The findings indicate that affiliate stigma has a direct effect on smartphone dependency. Additionally, social avoidance and anxiety partially mediate the relationship between affiliate stigma and smartphone dependency. Based on these results, this study suggests the need for disability awareness education and structured online and offline group programs tailored to adult siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities, collaborative programs between religious institutions and disability welfare organizations, programs to strengthen family communication, and exposure therapy programs utilizing VR.
