Abstract

North Korea’s nuclear crisis has been a contentious topic in past decades, especially in the United States and South Korea. North Korea claimed to have completed a nuclear test on October 9th, 2006. Although the nuclear test may have threatened the U.S. South Korea’s national security, the two countries’ media coverage was different. This research investigated and compared not only how U.S. and South Korean newspapers framed the North Korean nuclear crisis over time but also how the media frames influenced audience frames of the issue. The study also examined the influence of individual schemas in the framing process. Frame analyses identified the main frames of U.S. and South Korean newspapers reporting the crisis and traced the frame changes over time. Based these results, one was used as a stimulus materials for experiments, conducted in both countries. The experiment results found both media framing and schema effects on audience frames. Furthermore, individual schema also played a significant role in framing effects, specifically when audiences formed an opinion toward their governments’ foreign policies. Finally, the study found that U.S. media frames affected audience frames more than South Korean media frames did. The implications of these findings were discussed.
