한·미관계에 대한 미디어보도 분석:조선일보, MBC, New York Times 보도에 대한 프레임 분석을 중심으로

Abstract

This research analyzes South Korean and American media coverage of the U.S.-South Korean relations. To be specific, this research focuses on five cases (middle school female student case, relocation of U.S. forces in South Korea, moving of U.S. Embassy building in Seoul, dispatch of South Korean troops to Iraq, and finally, U.S.-South Korean alliance) reported by Chosun Ilbo and MBC, the leading press and TV media in South Korea, and the New York Times. By coding usages of frames appeared in each stories, this research indicates difference between TV and newspaper in their report on U.S.-South Korean relations. While MBC appears to emphasize national prestige vis-a-vis the United States, Chosun Ilbo appears to stress national interests, especially security ties with the United States. The discrepancy between press and TV media represents society-wide ideological, generational and political gap in South Korea. TV and newspaper tries to accomodate their stories to their readers and viewers, and at the same time, frame their opinions and evaluations of the subject within a certain sphere of discourse they prefer. New York Times, for its part, demonstrates unexpectedly low interest in reporting about U.S.-South Korean alliance, which reflect that American media regard the alliance not as important as its alliance with the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia.
