Abstract

International trade during the Late Bronze Age in the middle and eastern Mediterranean sea was a major factor contributing to the economic development and cultural integration of the Mycenaean World. Near Eastern texts such as the Amarna Letters and Ugarit tablets, wall paintings from the tombs of the eighteenth dynasty as well as archaeological data are evidence of such trade relations. Such materials suggests that Minoans and Mycenaeans actively involved in trade networks. However, the Linear B tablets, the sole literary source from the Mycenaean World do not include direct evidence of this trade, except for giving a few ambiguous hints of it. Recently, shipwreck remains from the Late Bronze Age found in the Aegean Sea attract much interest by their archaeological value. Especially the Uluburun shipwreck is regarded as critical evidence which shows the character of the international trade around the Aegean Sea around 1300 B.C. We can infer from the items of the wreckage that the international trading ship loaded and embarked at ports in Canaan and was heading to one of the Mycenaean palaces. The palace center, the conceived destination of the ships, imported high-valued prestige items such as jewels or semi-jewels, gold, ivory, glass as well as oxhide copper, tin and terebinth resin. For their payment Mycenaean centers exported other items in large volume such as vases, textiles, olive oil, perfumed oil, wine etc. Palace centers were provided with their own production systems and equipment for such materials. The Linear B tablets were part of the evidence for this. Bronze workings which do not need such sophisticated workshops were performed in different ways using the ta-ra-si-ja system. Some of the products were consumed internally but the others were reserved for sending abroad. Thereby, they could maintain a trade balance. We can find from the texts that gift exchanges between the rulers occupied a large part of the trade activity apart from commercial trade. High-level trade of precious metals and luxurious items performed as forms of gift exchange, and the raw materials such as bronze, tin and copper also seem to have been provided as gifts, though commercial activity and gift exchange were overlapped to a certain extent. In any case the ruling elites could reinforce their ruling ideology and power through the trade monopoly of exotic items from distant countries.
