Abstract
This paper examines the relationship between the center and periphery in proto-historic Europe, and aims to reconsider the nature of the exchange that took place between the Mediterranean zone and the Celts of the Iron Age. The perspective based on literary sources that the cultural elements of Greek civilization were unilaterally transmitted to the barbarian Celts was challenged and the active agency of the Celtic communities in adopting those elements was stressed. In addition, it was maintained that the insights gained through this case study, such as a re-evaluation of the nature of colonialism, the acknowledgement of the selective nature in adopting foreign cultural elements, and a re-assesment of the ‘prestige goods system’ model, could contribute to the discourse on the issue on the relationship between the core and periphery in areas outside Europe as well.
