초록

Belief in demons and evil spirits was widespread in the Hellenistic and Greco-Roman periods and supernatural beings, and in particular demons, were often cited as the primary cause of human diseases. This paper examines how the Testament of Solomon (hereafter TSol) as an exorcistic source deals with the process of curing illness by focusing on nullifying demons’ evil effects through calling their names. While exploring exorcistic texts (some materials containing the usage of the name of Solomon in ritualistic contexts), and Testament of Solomon in particular, this paper will present that the exorcism as a speech act conveying beneficial or destructive power, relies for its efficacy not only on the performer’s authority but also on the ritual procedure that calls for the invocation of divine power. And as the central element underlying the overall theme in the TSol for human health, well-being, and desires of everyday, exorcism provides a primary insight into the understanding of the TSol’s overarching purpose.
