초록

Medieval plague doctors applied the theory of six non-naturals, which is based on the Galenic tradition, to prevent the spread of diseases. When the so-called Black Death broke out in 1348, plague doctors considered this theory as an effective preventative means against the plague. The Black Death, however, was different from previous epidemics in speed, frequency, ferocity, etc., and thus could not be understood using the traditional humoral-miasma theory. Instead, the ‘poison theory’ came to be seen more applicable for examining the Black Death in comparison with other epidemics. The ‘poison theory’ as a means of understanding the Black Death led to the progression of the field of prevention research, adding the application of medicine to the traditional six non-naturals theory. In this context, this paper discusses further on how medieval plague doctors attempted to prevent the Black Death when it broke out.
